The Village![]() Illustration by Elizabeth Day
The proposed Village at the Galisteo Basin Preserve will be located in the northeast corner of the Preserve, immediately below New Moon Overlook. Gracefully held by the surrounding red rock hills and ridges, this mixed-use, mixed-income master planned community is designed to:
As a model of "conservation-based community development," the Village will leverage the sale of approximately 300 inclusive housing sites and 675 market rate home sites to underwrite the conservation and restoration of approximately 12,000 acres of publicly accessible open space. The residential program is likely to include a small "co-housing" neighborhood of 15-25 units, as well as an assisted living facility for older residents. With its proximity to a proposed commuter rail line, its innovative water conservation program, solar-oriented site plan, and "healthy buildings" construction practice, the Village will demonstrate the efficacy of "green development" in a workforce housing/conservation development context. Charter School 37—a dual-language, environmentally focused, expeditionary learning charter high school—will be physically and programmatically integrated into the community. As currently envisioned, the school will support a number of "joint-use" facilities including playfields, library, indoor swimming pool, meeting spaces and continuing educational classrooms. "CS37" opened at a temporary location in the fall of 2006, and is scheduled to relocate to its permanent home at the Village in 2010. The Village center is likely to include a café, post office, outpatient care medical facility, ATM, non-denominational chapel, outdoor amphitheatre, environmental center, and live-work commercial space for local artisans and community-based businesses. At the southern edge of the Village, a small organic farm, greenhouses and a "memorial landscape" are proposed. In addition to neighborhood parks, Village residents and the general public will have access to more than 30 miles of public and private trails for hiking, biking, and equestrian use. Santa Fe County approved the master plan for the Village at Galisteo Basin Preserve in June 2007. In anticipation of the next step in the approval process, Commonweal Conservancy continues to work with a variety of consultants and professionals in the planning, engineering, legal, and architectural fields. Subdivision approval for the first phase of development is anticipated by fall 2008. The first homes in the Village are expected to be available for purchase in early summer 2009. |
